Infertility is the inability of a couple to get pregnant despite having regular unprotected sex. A couple is regarded as infertile if, after regular sexual intercourse, they have not conceived in two years. It is estimated that one in seven UK couples has difficulty conceiving (HFEA, 2006).
There are many reasons why a couple experience difficulty conceiving including:
• ovulation issues
• menstrual cycle irregularities
• low sperm parameters: count, motility, morphology
Studies have show acupuncture to be helpful in assisting conception naturally and a marked increase of up to 65% when used in conjunction with IVF. in 2008 Eric Manheimer from the University of Maryland published an authoritative review of acupuncture's effect on IVF treatment in the British Medical Journal. The report was based on seven studies published in English since 2002 (involving women variously treated with real acupuncture, sham acupuncture or no acupuncture) and found that genuine acupuncture could increase a woman's chance of pregnancy by 65%.
Leigh has undertaken advanced training in providing acupuncture to assist both natural fertility and alongside IVF.
